Buddy Up! Upcoming Dive Trips More trips being planned so stay tuned, and remember you can always organise a trip yourself! If you've got somewhere you'd like to go but aren't sure where to start, just e-mail the Dive Coordinator. North West Island, July 2nd to 11thThese July holidays, as winter gets cold and nasty in Melbourne, 20 lucky MUUC members will be traveling to North West Island. At the southern end of the Great Barrier Reef, 80km off the coast of Queensland this deserted coral cay is surrounded by golden beaches and blue water filled with turtles, manta rays, and thousands of fish. We'll be chartering a ferry and taking the two club boats, along with our own compressor and spending 8 nights (7 diving days) diving, camping and frolicking in the sunshine. North West Island is completely deserted, with the only infrastructure being a composting toilet. This means everyone who comes will need to bring absolutely everything you need for a week of wilderness camping without electricity, sunbaking on a white sand beach, and diving until you're sick of seeing turtles. To get all the latest updates and details and to sign up for the trip check out the thread on messageboard here! The club went to North West Island in 2007, and the trip filled up in under two weeks, so be quick! A $350 deposit will secure your spot, with the total trip cost (includes dives, airfills, camping and ferry transport to and from the island) being $700. Underwater Hockey The best fun you'll have on the bottom of a swimming pool! The sport is played along the bottom of the pool, where teams of 6 players hold their breath and move a lead puck into goal trays on each end of the pool. You have to push, flick and otherwise manouvering the puck with short, hand-held sticks. See this article for more information on the game. Club games are played at 8-9pm on Monday nights at the uni Sports Centre pool (on Tin Alley). No prior experience is necessary and all equipment (except mask and snorkel) is provided, so just turn up if you're interested in giving it a try. Sessions generally consist of a half hour warm-up and skills practice session, followed by a half hour game. Make sure you get in by 7:50 to allow time to get changed, select gear, etc. See the Underwater Hockey page on the website, the Underwater Hockey section of the message boards for discussion, or contact the underwater hockey coordinator if you have any questions.
