What dive courses does MUUC offer?MUUC Inc. offers PADI dive courses. PADI is the largest SCUBA training agency worldwide and has trained in excess of 8 Million divers. PADI dive qualifications are accepted world wide. You can check out PADI's website using the link to the left. We offer mainly four types of courses: - PADI Open Water Course ($450)
This is the entry level diving course and qualifies to dive to a depth of 18 m with a similarly or higher qualified diver. Prerequisites for this course are the ability to swim 200 m and to tread water (float) for 10 min. The Open Water Course usually runs over two consecutive weekends (or four weeknights (5pm - 9pm) and one weekend). - PADI Advanced Open Water Course ($360)
This course qualifies you to dive to a depth of 30 m with a similarly or higher qualified diver. Prerequisite is an Open Water Diver qualification. The Advanced Open Water Course normally runs over one weekend, and involves five dives. Three are shore dives, and could include navigation as well as two of search and recovery, naturalist and night. Two are boat dives: deep and wreck or drift. - PADI Rescue Diver Course, incl. EFR ($520)
This course teaches the skills involved to manage dive accidents, but will also offer many tools to manage your own diving stress and problems. Theory includes (but is not limited to) managing diving accidents, dive gear and related problems, and basic medic first aid. The practical part of the course culminates in scenarios in which the students have to locate and rescue an unconscious diver from depth. Prerequisite is an Advanced Open Water Diver qualification. To fully qualify as a PADI Rescue Diver, you have to hold a current (i.e. not older than 24 months) CPR qualification, which can be completed as part of the course. The entire course normally consists of one weeknight and a full weekend. - PADI Divemaster Course ($690 + Boatdives)
he role of a PADI Divemaster consists mainly of (a) assisting in dive courses, and (b) leading dives of certified divers. In addition, a PADI Divemaster can conduct a range of snorkel and dive experience programs. It constitutes the first level of a professional diving career. We run this course as an internship-based program. Prerequisites to enrol in a Divemaster Course are minimum age of 18, a minimum of 20 logged dives, and a Rescue Diver qualification. To finally qualify as a divemaster you need at least 60 logged dives. The PADI Divemaster Course is a time consuming course. Plan an average of 6 months for the completion of your internship.
In addition, we can offer specialty courses like PADI Nitrox or Wreck Diver, IANTD Deep/Nitrox and Advanced Nitrox Diver or CDAA Cavern/Sinkhole on demand, generally in the less busy winter months. How much are the dive courses and what is included in the price?- PADI Open Water Course - $450
- PADI Advanced Open Water Course - $360
- PADI Rescue Diver Course - $520 (incl. EFR course)
- PADI Divemaster Course - ca. $690 (not including cost for accom and boat dives when assisting on courses)
These prices include the hire of all gear needed, pool entrance and course material (e.g. PADI manuals) unless otherwise stated. However, for hygiene reasons we do not supply neoprene boots, which we recommend you purchase, particularly for winter courses. You can buy these boots during the course. The course fees DO NOT include: - The MUUC Inc. annual membership fees (membership year from 1 March - 28 February). You must be a member to participate in a course. You can join MUUC Inc. on the first day of your course. These fees are:
- Melbourne University, or students of any other institution - $40
- Non-students - $130
Cost for travel to dive sites and accommodation are also not included in the course price. I am not a Melbourne Uni Student, can I still do a course with MUUC Inc, and how much (more) does it cost?Yes, even non-students or students from other institutions can do dive courses with MUUC Inc. The price of the courses are the same, however, non-students and students from other institutions must join the Melbourne University Sports Association (1 March - 28 February). You do not have to contact the Sports Association yourself, MUUC will organize the membership for you. You need a dive medical for an Open Water Course (beginner level). You do not need a medical for an Advanced Open Water Course or a Rescue Course. Please get a medical clearance before you enrol in an Open Water Course, i.e. before you put down a deposit, as the deposit is non-refundable. The Melbourne University Student Health Centre (Cardigan St, Carlton) is conducting dive medicals. Alternatively, find a list of dive doctors here (SPUMS Homepage)! Prices for a dive medical range from ca. $70 - $140, so it is a good idea to call the doctors first to get a quote. The cost of the medical is not covered by Medicare, or private health funds. (You are diving for fun, it's not a medical condiciton!) The dive medical has to be conducted according to the Australian Standard AS 4005.1, which defines the requirements for a recreational scuba diving medical examination. The medical form you bring with you to the dive course must state that the examination was carried out according to AS 4005.1. We do not accept medicals which have not been conducted according to AS 4005.1! If you attend an Open Water Course without an acceptable medical you will not be allowed in the water. Where do you conduct the dive Courses?- We conduct the theory parts of our courses at Melbourne University, generally in the Dive Club Shed and Sports Centre, both located on Tin Alley.
- Pool sessions are generally held at Wesley College swimming pool in Prahran. Your instructor will normally arrange car pooling to get there. Alternatively, the Number 6 tram from University goes by on High Street (Wesley).
- Our ocean dives are generally in Port Phillip Bay, e.g. Portsea, Rye, Mornington or Flinders, depending on the weather.
When is the next Open Water/Advanced Open Water/Rescue Course?Check the MUUC Website (http://www.muuc.org.au) for details. How do I enrol in a course? To enrol in a MUUC dive course contact the Course Coordinators by email (muuc.courses@gmail.com). We will email you back with all the info you need to enrol in the course of your choice. Alternatively come to the weekly meetings on Thursdays at the Clyde. You will have to pay a deposit of $250 - only this deposit will secure your spot in the course! We strictly apply a 'first-come first-served' rule and no exceptions will be made. Is the course deposit refundable? No. If you bail out of a course, we may not fill it again and the club will not only loose the income of that course, but also our subsidy form the Sport Association, which is based on our incoming funds. The deposit doesn't even come close to covering these losses. So make sure that you are fit for diving by consulting a dive doctor before putting down a deposit! Who teaches the MUUC dive courses? We have a number of instructors in the club: - Uwe Ackermann - PADI Instructor
- Terri Allen - PADI/EFR/CDAA Instructor
- Michael O'Toole - PADI/IANTD Instructor
- Brent Cross - PADI Instructor
We also have a number of club members who are Divemasters, and from time to time may assist on courses. Does MUUC accept credit cards ?No, we do not have any credit card facilities. We accept payment in cash or cheques made out to Melbourne University Underwater Club Inc.
